The Street Fighter film features Callina Liang in the role of Chun-Li.
As Legendary’s film adaptation of Street Fighter gains momentum, Deadline reports that a significant role has been cast. Callina Liang (Presence) will portray Chun-Li, one of the most iconic characters in the Street Fighter franchise.
Chun-Li made her debut in Street Fighter II as “a highly skilled martial artist and Interpol agent.” The series centers on a fighting tournament led by the villainous M. Bison and his Shadaloo organization, who aim to conquer the world.
Liang is joining a cast that features Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Roman Reigns as Akuma, and Orville Peck as Vega, with Walton Goggins from Justified and The White Lotus in discussions for the role of Bison.
Street Fighter was previously adapted in 1993, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia. Though it performed poorly at the box office, it later gained a cult following. A film focused on Chun-Li was also released in 2009, featuring Kristin Kreuk from Smallville in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, but it has a much more negative reputation among fans of the franchise and video game adaptations compared to its predecessor.
The upcoming Street Fighter film will be directed by Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) with a script by Dalan Musson (Captain America: Brave New World).
