Folktales Trailer: Jesus Camp Directors Discover a Canine Connection in Arctic Norway
The Oscar-nominated directors of Jesus Camp, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, returned to the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year with Folktales, a documentary that follows teenagers at a traditional folk high school in Arctic Norway, where they must depend solely on themselves, each other, and a devoted team of sled dogs as they embark on unexpected personal journeys. Magnolia Pictures has acquired the film for a theatrical release starting July 25, and they have now released the first trailer and poster.
Here’s the synopsis: “In Norse mythology, the three ‘Norns’ are mighty deities who weave the threads of fate and guide human destinies. Today, Pasvik Folk High School in northern Norway aspires to create a similarly transformative experience for its students. FOLKTALES tells a heartfelt and timely story about teenagers opting for an unconventional ‘gap year’ to learn dog sledding and survive the Arctic wilderness, in hopes of discovering connection and purpose in the modern world. With the support of attentive teachers and a yard full of courageous Alaskan huskies, they uncover their potential and build meaningful relationships with the land, animals, and people surrounding them. Through personal verité storytelling and stunning cinematography, Ewing and Grady explore young adults on the brink of adulthood, discovering themselves at the world's edge.”
