Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the upcoming James Bond film.

Having gained complete creative control of the James Bond franchise from longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli earlier this year, Amazon MGM Studios has appointed Denis Villeneuve as the director for the upcoming installment of 007.

Currently, Villeneuve is preparing to return to Arrakis for a follow-up to his acclaimed two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, Dune. His impressive filmography also includes works such as Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049.

“Some of my earliest movie memories are linked to 007,” Villeneuve said. “I watched James Bond films with my father, starting with Dr. No starring Sean Connery. I am a passionate Bond fan. To me, this is sacred territory. I aim to honor the tradition while paving the way for many new missions ahead. This is a significant responsibility, but it’s also incredibly exciting and a huge honor for me. [Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman] and I are absolutely delighted to bring him back to the screen. I appreciate the trust from Amazon MGM Studios.”

“Denis Villeneuve has loved James Bond movies since childhood,” added Pascal and Heyman, who were named the new caretakers of the Bond franchise under Amazon MGM in March. “It has always been his dream to create this film, and now it’s ours as well. We feel fortunate to be working with such an extraordinary filmmaker.”

“We are privileged that Denis has agreed to direct the next chapter of James Bond,” said Amazon MGM Studios chief Mike Hopkins. “He is a cinematic genius, and his body of work speaks volumes. From Blade Runner 2049 to Arrival to the Dune films, he has created captivating worlds, stunning visuals, complex characters, and—most importantly—the immersive storytelling that global audiences crave in theaters. James Bond is now in the hands of one of the greatest filmmakers today, and we can't wait to embark on 007’s next adventure.”

With Villeneuve set to direct, excitement will surely build regarding who will be cast as the next 007. However, Villeneuve is expected to start filming on the third Dune movie this summer, targeting a December 2026 release, suggesting it may take a while before the next James Bond is revealed to the public.
