First Trailer for In the Mood for Love 2001 Enhances Wong Kar-wai’s Iconic Love Story
Following the announcement that Wong Kar-wai's highly anticipated *Blossoms Shanghai* will finally have a North American release this year through the Criterion Channel, Janus Films has revealed another surprise from the director set to debut in theaters this week. After its Valentine's Day release in Hong Kong, Wong Kar-wai's *In The Mood For Love 2001*, a nine-minute extension that was previously shown only during a masterclass at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, will be screened alongside the 25th-anniversary edition of his iconic romance. Ahead of the release, which begins this Friday at NYC’s Film at Lincoln Center and IFC Center and on July 4 at LA’s Laemmle Royal and Glendale, additional footage has been shared through a new trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Hong Kong, 1962: Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) move into adjacent apartments on the same day. Their interactions are formal and polite—until a revelation about their spouses forges an intimate connection between them. Both delicately refined and visually lavish, Wong Kar-wai’s *In the Mood for Love* deeply evokes romantic yearning and ephemeral encounters. Featuring a poignant musical score and beautifully abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin, this film has significantly influenced cinematic style over the past 25 years.”
And here’s the synopsis for *In The Mood For Love 2001*: “Originally envisioned as part of a triptych on food, *In the Mood for Love* was developed into a stand-alone film that garnered immediate acclaim as a contemporary classic. The final third—intended as the 'dessert,' as Wong Kar-wai describes it—was, until now, only presented during his masterclass at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. Now, making its wide release debut, *In the Mood for Love 2001* showcases the director's remarkable ability to create a vivid atmosphere and striking characterizations on a compact scale—with *In the Mood for Love* stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Maggie Cheung Man-yuk once again delivering electrifying chemistry, encapsulating the enigma of fleeting, unexpected connections in the modern city through Wong's distinctive romantic style.”
