Relay Trailer: Riz Ahmed stars as a Fixer in David Mackenzie’s suspenseful film.
After the longest hiatus of his career since 2018's Outlaw King, David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) returns with Relay. The thriller, which features Riz Ahmed, Lily James, Sam Worthington, Willa Fitzgerald, Matthew Maher, and Victor Garber, had its premiere at TIFF last fall and will be released on August 22 by Bleecker Street. In anticipation of its launch, the first trailer has been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “In RELAY, Riz Ahmed portrays a world-class ‘fixer’ adept at arranging substantial payoffs between corrupt corporations and those who threaten their downfall. He maintains anonymity through meticulous strategies and adheres to a strict set of rules. However, when a message arrives from a potential client (Lily James) seeking his protection to survive, the established rules begin to shift rapidly.”
In his review, Jared Mobarak remarked, “The ensuing suspense is highly effective, despite largely consisting of scenes where various relay operatives vocalize Tom's typed messages while Sarah listens. The dynamic editing and the awareness that a third party is at stake create a tense atmosphere regarding who will falter first. This is why the first half resonates so powerfully, with Ahmed delivering a mostly silent performance while setting the stage for everything to ultimately unravel. An early airport scene highlights his ability to manage multiple tasks, showcasing the eagerness of Worthington and the others to see if they can keep pace. Ultimately, perfection on both sides is meaningless if the woman at the center can be deceived into revealing the strategy.”
