Former Superman Dean Cain: The New Superman is Too Woke

Former Superman actor Dean Cain expressed that he plans to see James Gunn’s new Superman film, featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, but he defended a remark made by Fox News' Jesse Watters regarding the new Superman's pro-immigrant stance, suggesting that his cape should read “MS-13.”

Cain, who portrayed Clark Kent/Superman in the 1990s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, spoke with TMZ about the upcoming film and Watters' comments. Watters reacted to Gunn's interview with the Sunday Times, where Gunn compared Superman to an immigrant.

Gunn explained, “Superman represents the story of America: an immigrant who came from elsewhere and enriched the nation. Ultimately, it's a narrative that emphasizes basic human kindness, which we seem to have lost.”

This led to backlash from some on the right who claimed the film is overly pro-immigrant, especially during a time when the Trump Administration was focused on immigration enforcement.

On Fox News' The Five, former Trump Administration advisor Kellyanne Conway remarked, “We don’t go to the movies to receive a lecture or to have ideologies imposed on us.”

Watters then quipped, “You know what it says on his cape? MS-13.”

During his interview with TMZ, Cain stated that Watters' comments made valid political points with a bit of sarcasm. He tried to clarify Watters' criticism about MS-13 by suggesting it was questioning how far Hollywood would go in altering such a character and how much Disney would change its classic characters.

Cain continued, “Changing beloved characters isn't necessarily a good idea. If you want to create a new character, that’s fine. However, Superman has always symbolized truth, justice, and the American way, which is welcoming to immigrants, but there are rules. One can't come here demanding to abolish the existing laws to make America more like Somalia. That logic is flawed since they had to flee Somalia to reach here.”

Cain’s remarks included hypothetical scenarios, as it is unclear who, in fact, wishes for the U.S. to resemble Somalia, a nation troubled by longstanding conflict and crises since the fall of Siad Barre's regime in 1991.

He further mentioned, “If people are seeking economic opportunities, we need to examine their governments and why such opportunities are lacking. There must be limitations because it’s impractical for everyone to come to the United States. Our society cannot sustain that.”

Once again, it remains ambiguous whom Cain believes supports unrestricted immigration.

Cain also expressed concerns about ICE agents being unfairly portrayed as villains for enforcing laws established by elected representatives. He commented that the United States is in a precarious position and that the present divisions are fueled by politicians and NGOs with specific agendas.

James Gunn’s film is the eighth to feature Superman, a character created in 1938 by Jewish immigrant sons Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster during the rise of Nazism. The story follows Kal-El, whose parents send him from the dying planet Krypton to Earth, where he gains extraordinary powers from the yellow sun, using them to protect humanity.

Superman is now showing in theaters.
