Whether intentional or not, the Criterion Channel’s programming showcasing Maurice Pialat and Michael Roemer pairs two filmmakers who shared a similar, death-themed narrative style. The lineup for August includes nine features and one short from Pialat, along with four features and one documentary from Roemer. Additionally, series focusing on Sammo Hung and Bigas Luna will mix in pop, sexy, and violent elements, creating an ideal conclusion to summer.
On the series front, “’90s Soundtrack Movies” explores the connections between Lost Highway and Pump Up the Volume; a highlight from Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project features significant works such as Kalpana and Chess of the Wind; and a new anime series kicks off with Ghost in the Shell and Paprika.
