Leia Yan discusses her recent short film Marrow - Exclusive Interview

Leia Yan is an engaging actress with a diverse cultural background and a lifelong commitment to storytelling. In a special interview, Flickering Myth spoke with Leia about her short film Marrow.

Hello, Leia! Welcome to Flickering Myth! What inspired your journey into acting and led you to realize it was your true calling?

Acting has always been the underlying thread connecting all my artistic endeavors—from dance and music to competitive performances. However, my confidence has developed gradually, like assembling a mosaic. Each film that took my breath away, every play that lingered in my thoughts for weeks, and every new project that unveiled unexplored facets of human nature—these moments have collectively solidified my conviction day by day.

What distinguishes you from other actors?

Aside from my cultural background, I believe that my experience as a professional dancer for over ten years has equipped me with a unique physical language. Ultimately, my goal isn’t to stand out; I strive to give my best to fulfill the story's needs.

Who influenced you growing up and contributed to shaping who you are today?

While everyone I've encountered has impacted me in some way, I would say my mother has had the most significant influence on every aspect of my life. She continues to raise the bar by being an inspiring example. I learn from her every day.

In the current Hollywood landscape, there is a strong movement towards greater inclusivity and representation. How do you envision your work contributing to this cause, and what changes do you still wish to see in the industry?

I’m pleased to see the industry becoming more open to diverse stories and characters. For my own work, I hope to create moments where people forget I am "representing." I believe true inclusivity is less about highlighting differences and more about making them irrelevant in critical moments. Instead of merely addressing stereotypes, I want to transcend them. Therefore, I hope the industry can offer more roles and narratives that allow for this perspective.

You've recently finished a project; can you tell us about Marrow?

Marrow explores two teenagers breaking down their barriers during a quiet night together. Through mutual understanding and vulnerability, they find comfort in each other's presence. I portray the lead character, Claire, a teenage girl deeply attuned to her emotions and eager for connection. We've just completed the project and are now in post-production, aiming for the festival circuit this Fall.

Can you share any entertaining anecdotes from the set?

Absolutely! We shot many scenes in the smallest library room. While it appears sweet, cozy, and organized on camera, during the shoot, my scene partner and I found ourselves in quite the tangled mess!

We're eager to see it. Have you established any professional goals for 2025?

My aim is intentional growth. I’d like to secure a role that completely pushes me out of my comfort zone. I want to remain curious, grateful, and open.

Lastly, if you could share one message with your fans, what would it be?

Continue doing what brings you joy! Be kind to yourself and others; it makes everything better!

Wise words! What’s the best way for your fans to follow you online?

Individuals can check out my work on IMDb.

We thank Leia Yan for taking the time for this interview.
