Review of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 3 - "Shuttle to Kenfori"

Chris Connor reviews the third episode of Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds…

The third season of Strange New Worlds kicked off with a bang, picking up from the cliffhanger at the end of season two and showcasing The Enterprise's escape from The Gorn. The second episode introduced some comedic moments, particularly thanks to guest star Rhys Darby.

The third episode, titled “Shuttle to Kenfori,” continues several plot lines introduced in the premiere. Captain Batel grapples with the effects of Gorn blood she was infected with, while Ortegas exhibits signs of erratic behavior, possibly due to her own encounters with the Gorn.

We follow two distinct storylines: Pike and M’Benga seek a way to stabilize Batel’s condition, while the rest of the Enterprise crew aims to avert a conflict with the Klingons, with the crucial information necessary for Batel's recovery located in Klingon territory.

After an episode centered on Spock and Chapel, it's enjoyable to have a more ensemble-focused episode here, with both storylines receiving ample screen time, allowing for the advancement of multiple narrative arcs simultaneously.

One remarkable aspect of Strange New Worlds is its embrace of various genres, which is evident in this episode as M’Benga and Pike confront zombie-like creatures on the Klingon surface, adding urgency to their mission. This heightens the thrills and creates an atmosphere of lingering dread and suspense. M’Benga certainly doesn't need a deadly challenge from the Klingons stemming from his past actions.

Ortegas also finds herself in constant conflict with Number One in this episode, frequently speaking back and prompting the crew to wonder if she has rejoined them too soon. Whether this will lead to deeper investigations in the future remains uncertain.

“Shuttle to Kenfori” exemplifies classic Star Trek, reminding us of the show's appeal to both long-time fans and newcomers alike. The episode is filled with tension, action, and emotion, with each member of the ensemble granted their moment in the limelight. With three episodes in, Strange New Worlds is poised for a strong season that promises to take some unexpected turns.
