Train Dreams Trailer: Joel Edgerton Stars in Adaptation of Denis Johnson's Work
One of the most stunning and poignant films of the year is Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams, an adaptation of Denis Johnson's work that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. The film features a cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, Paul Schneider, Kerry Condon, William H. Macy, and is narrated by Will Patton. Netflix has just released the first trailer in anticipation of its theatrical release on November 7 and its debut on Netflix on November 21.
The synopsis reads: “Based on Denis Johnson’s cherished novella, Train Dreams presents a poignant portrayal of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who experiences a life filled with unexpected depth and beauty amid the swiftly evolving America of the early 20th Century.”
In his Sundance review, Dan Mecca writes, “There is a moment in Train Dreams, directed by Clint Bentley, where a tree falls gracefully to the ground, enveloped by lush greenery. Particles scatter from the impact, illuminated by sunlight, making these seemingly insignificant specks shine as beautifully as anything else in the frame. This striking image underscores the film’s broader theme: there are wonders, both grand and small. There is also tragedy, and who will remember any of it? More importantly, does it even matter?”
"I believe most of us will not significantly impact history, yet we can lead profoundly deep and beautiful lives. There’s something uniquely special about [Robert Grainier’s] story; it is very specific to one individual but captures a universal experience of a person trying to navigate a world that is constantly changing around them, often leaving them behind, even while they still exist,” Bentley remarked.
