Basic Instinct is slated for an "anti-woke" reboot written by the original writer Joe Eszterhas.
After securing a record $3 million for his script for the original film, the now octogenarian Joe Eszterhas has landed another lucrative deal for a Basic Instinct reboot, collaborating with Amazon MGM Studios on a revival of the iconic 1992 erotic thriller.
As reported by The Wrap, Eszterhas is guaranteed to receive $2 million (with a potential total of $4 million if the project progresses) for a script that offers an "anti-woke" reimagining of the already anti-woke original, directed by Paul Verhoeven and featuring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone, the latter of whom gained fame with her role as the suspected serial killer, Catherine Tramell.
“To those who wonder what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist,” Eszterhas remarked, whose notable works include Flashdance, Jagged Edge, Sliver, Showgirls, and Jade. “I refer to my writing partner as the TWISTED LITTLE MAN who resides deep within me. He is eternally 29 and insists he is ‘sky high up’ to craft this piece and deliver viewers a wild and orgasmic experience. That brings me immense joy.”
Currently, there are no additional details regarding the project, and it's unclear whether the film will be a direct remake, a legacy sequel, or a reboot of the original and/or its 2006 sequel, Basic Instinct 2, which saw Stone return to her role. However, it's likely we can exclude any appearance from Michael Douglas, as the acclaimed actor has recently declared an end to his on-screen career.
