Film producer Nathalie Zagar Abitbol discusses Alpha 27 - Exclusive Interview
Nathalie Zagar Abitbol is a producer and script supervisor who has long embraced the idea of living life with intention, passion, and curiosity. Originally from Mexico City and raised by French parents, she grew up at the crossroads of diverse cultures, languages, and viewpoints, allowing her to thrive in a rich multicultural environment. Fluent in French, Spanish, and English, her varied background has fueled her passion for communication and storytelling. In an exclusive interview, Flickering Myth spoke with Nathalie about her experiences in filmmaking and her project Alpha 27.
Welcome, Nathalie, to Flickering Myth! Who inspired you during your upbringing and shaped you into who you are today?
Naturally, my family comes to mind first, particularly my mom, dad, and uncle. I have always admired them and attribute my growth to their influence. My dad served in the army and has always been the most disciplined person in my life, instilling in me the importance of hard work and perseverance. He achieved everything through effort as nothing ever came easily for him. My mom is incredibly caring, ambitious, and dedicated; she has continuously supported me in realizing my dreams, always helping me back up when I felt I couldn't do it on my own. She is relentless in pursuing her goals, achieving them while remaining kind and loving toward everyone. Her example drives me to constantly strive to become the best version of myself. My uncle was one of the most diligent people I knew, deeply passionate about his work, and his dedication ensured successful outcomes. He was always ready to assist others, understanding that kindness costs nothing and valuing friendship over enmity. He was a pillar of support during struggles within the family or his close circle and believed in me wholeheartedly, encouraging me never to give up. Following his passing, I promised to do everything in my power to make him proud, dedicating each achievement to him.
As an international producer in Hollywood, how do your roots and cultural background affect your work and the roles you pursue?
In truth, I don't let my heritage significantly influence my choices. When I engage in a project, it's more about whether I connect with the story rather than my background. I always seek ways to relate to the projects I undertake, whether it's through the message, resonating with a character, or finding a situation that sparks my interest. Naturally, I enjoy working on films that highlight my heritage, which always holds a special significance for me. However, it ultimately boils down to the story and the message conveyed by the film. I place a high value on well-developed scripts because that’s what stays with the audience. A superb cast and stunning visuals mean little if the narrative lacks depth. There have been instances where I couldn’t participate in films revolving around my heritage simply because the story was poorly developed or the characters lacked the spark needed to evoke connection. It also depends on the film's intention. For instance, if a project is framed in a way that mocks or disrespects the culture, I would certainly not join that team, as the aim should never be to offend. There are respectful ways to convey messages, even in parody, ensuring they are not seen as cruel or disrespectful. Ultimately, my decisions about projects reflect my values and morals and whether I connect with the story.
One of your early producing roles was in Alpha 27. Can you tell us what that film is about?
Yes, Alpha 27 centers on Diego, who must safeguard the life he has built on Earth as unexpected events compel him to return to his original space colony. It was written and directed by Nick Azzaro and features Michael Sullivan, Kadan Well Bennett, Seren Lee, and Jake I. Garcia.
How did you get involved with the movie?
I had previously collaborated with the director on other projects. During numerous carpool rides to the set, we would discuss future endeavors and past works. Nick is an extraordinary filmmaker; he graduated from the Academy Gold program and has contributed to many fantastic projects. When he began working on Alpha 27, I felt an immediate connection to the story once I heard the premise. Even though the circumstances are fictional, the narrative felt genuine and emotional, reflecting relatable struggles and the universal fight for love. After screening the film at festivals, audiences frequently inquired about a feature-length version, leading Nick and me to consider expanding Alpha 27 into a full-length film. I am thrilled about our ongoing collaboration and look forward to more projects together as I am confident in his talent and future success. Working with him on set is always a pleasure.
Chaos is often part of the filming process. Can you share any interesting facts?
We constructed two sets entirely from scratch: the airport and the office with the secretary were built in a warehouse. To enhance the space theme, we needed to realize Nick’s vision completely for the sets. With all the effects and edits, the final result aligns with what the director imagined. The film is currently making the festival circuit,
