SYNOPSIS:
The Bad Guys are finding it challenging to gain trust and acceptance in their new lives as Good Guys when they are unexpectedly pulled out of retirement for "one last job" by an all-female team of criminals.
Continuing from where the previous film ended, the dynamic, action-packed, and humor-filled The Bad Guys 2 follows the group of former thieves—Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (voiced by Marc Maron), Ms. Tarantula (voiced by Awkwafina), Mr. Shark (voiced by Craig Robinson), and Mr. Piranha (voiced by Anthony Ramos)—as they attempt, often unsuccessfully, to be good. Their struggle largely stems from societal perceptions of reformed individuals. A new heist team, known as The Bad Girls—comprised of daring snow leopard Kitty Kat (voiced by Danielle Brooks), the muscle Pigtail (voiced by Maria Bakalova), and clever strategist Doom (voiced by Natasha Lyonne)—raises the question of whether a life of crime might still be the best option for The Bad Guys.
Finding themselves in an unreliable vehicle, the once arrogant and clever Mr. Wolf is having trouble finding a job. His attempts to apply to a bank he previously robbed (a humorous moment spoiled by trailers) do not help, and there's a pervasive stigma against them from figures like Police Chief/Governor Misty Luggins (voiced by Alex Borstein) and others they reach out to for legitimate employment. While Mr. Wolf maintains a friendship with Governor Diane Foxington (voiced by Zazie Beetz), a former thief who framed the first film's villain Professor Rupert Marmalade IV (voiced by Richard Ayoade in a returning minor role) for her past crimes, he begins to wonder if they’ll always remain just friends, with a potent temptation pulling him back into his old life. This past also factors into the narrative, offering potential lessons about accountability for younger viewers, even if it could delve deeper.
Though it may seem like a lot for kids, director Pierre Perifel (alongside co-director JP Sans, with a screenplay by Yoni Brenner and Etan Cohen, based on Aaron Blabey's books) wraps the message in an engaging and enjoyable manner, ensuring it resonates without feeling like a tedious lecture. The themes are distinct (much more so than the typical "be yourself" message that many recent animated films have overworked), with a talented voice cast delivering truly impactful performances.
The action is also grand in scale, with stakes that exceed expectations, enhanced by a score from modern composer Daniel Pemberton that elevates the film in ways typically seen less frequently in such features. Although some juvenile humor is included to maintain the attention of younger audiences, the story and themes are sufficiently mature for all viewers. There are also some well-deserved adult-centric jokes, such as Mr. Snake's peculiar penchant for manipulation or blackmail, and a darkly comedic cut that may unsettle younger viewers until its context is clarified. The characters face inventive challenges, which require them to think creatively to navigate their predicaments.
Admittedly, The Bad Guys 2 does feel reminiscent of the first film, as the group is drawn into another job under certain circumstances that will remain unspoiled. This repetition is somewhat disappointing, especially since some of the most amusing and inspirational moments unfold in the first act, showcasing the crew's adjustment to their new way of life. There’s a sense that filmmakers may not trust this concept would sustain an entertaining film, particularly with the additional flashback prologue that seems designed merely to augment the theft theme. Nonetheless, it is commendable that the filmmakers successfully portray each character as a well-developed individual rather than just another talking animal. With vibrant animation, an energetic cast, and relevant themes, The Bad Guys 2 stands as another solid entry in the animated franchise.
