SYNOPSIS:
Heather's journey in Europe takes an unexpected turn when she meets Jack, leading both on an unforeseen emotional adventure.
For nearly an hour, it's hard not to feel restless wondering if anything significant is going to unfold in Lasse Hallström's The Map That Leads to You. It becomes apparent that the central conflict between the two characters—one focused on routine and future plans, while the other lives in the moment and finds even the mention of future plans to spark a minor disagreement—offers a clear indication of the film's trajectory.
The film, penned by Les Bohem and Vera Herbert and inspired by J.P. Monninger's book, seems uninterested in delving into substantial drama, almost as if aware of the exhaustion it brings and the emotional manipulation involved. It's a film that resembles a "disease of the week" story, attempting to gloss over that element and prolong its reveal out of sheer embarrassment. Ultimately, The Map That Leads to You is a familiar, hollow experience, although it delays this outcome for as long as possible.
Heather Mulgrew (Madelyn Cline) and her friends (Madison Thompson and Sofia Wylie) are on a vacation across Europe, celebrating their freedom and the conclusion of this chapter before moving into a New York City apartment and starting new jobs in banking. During their travels, each encounters men interested in them, with Heather catching the eye of New Zealander Jack (K.J. Apa), who flirts with her when they discover they are both reading the same Ernest Hemingway novel.
Jack, however, is not exactly on vacation; he's roaming Europe, visiting sites described in his war veteran grandfather's journal, hoping to find some sense of closure. Heather assures her friends that there's no romantic connection developing, but that changes when they wake up together in a gondola with a breathtaking view.
This scenario leads to the group often parting ways, which seems risky, considering they're frequently going off with strangers. The film treats this lightly, even hinting at danger when one of Heather's friends has her belongings stolen (including her passport), which becomes a chance for Jack to play the hero. Soon, her friends must return home, but the typically practical Heather unexpectedly opts to delay her flight at Jack's request to continue exploring with him.
Aside from a brief argument where Jack criticizes tourists for taking selfies for social media rather than experiencing the moment, the bulk of the film features the two of them sightseeing through Europe, as if the production company hopes to benefit from audiences purchasing flights. A significant portion of the movie feels rushed in the third act, leading to a confusing conclusion with an illogical timeline, seemingly prioritizing leisurely travel over a gripping narrative.
Consequently, when the anticipated drama finally arises, it remains clichéd, though not as overtly as in typical films. Erratic actions are excused due to misunderstandings and fear, when clearer communication would resolve the issues. While this may minimize conflict, it’s clear that there wasn’t much to begin with. This is disappointing, given that Madelyn Cline and K.J. Apa deliver otherwise authentic performances and their sisterhood feels genuine, devoid of forced jealousy. The film also showcases visually appealing settings and locations. Regrettably, The Map That Leads to You leads to little of genuine interest.
