Daniel Day-Lewis Makes His Comeback in the First Trailer for Ronan Day-Lewis' Anemone
Casting announcements seldom echo as loudly as the news of Daniel Day-Lewis’ return. After an apparent retirement following Phantom Thread eight years ago, he has both resurfaced (presumably from a life of dressmaking or cobbling) and made his debut: Anemone, a feature directed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis, will be the actor’s first screenwriting credit. The pair has crafted a drama that fittingly delves into “the intricate relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers, as well as the dynamics of familial bonds.” Focus Features will release the film (which also stars Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton) in limited theatres on October 3, with a wider release on October 10, and ahead of this (and in anticipation of a world premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival), the first trailer has been released.
Here’s the synopsis from NYFF: “Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis makes a powerful return to the screen for his first role in eight years in this gripping family drama directed by Ronan Day-Lewis. The film explores lives disrupted by complex legacies of political and personal violence. Co-written by the father-son duo, the film is set in Northern England and follows a middle-aged man (Sean Bean) who leaves his suburban home to journey into the woods, where he reconnects with his estranged hermit brother (Day-Lewis). United by a mysterious, complicated history, the men navigate a troubled yet sometimes tender relationship—one that was profoundly changed by painful events from decades earlier. This emotional powerhouse of a directorial debut is confident in both its subtle details and grand themes as it depicts the struggle for familial redemption against overwhelming odds. Alongside its unflinching lead performances, Anemone features impressive supporting roles from Samantha Morton and Samuel Bottomley, complemented by striking widescreen cinematography from Ben Fordesman.”
