U.S. Teaser for Bi Gan's Resurrection, Premiering in December
One of the most talked-about films at Cannes—and arguably one of the best—is arriving sooner than anticipated. Janus Films has scheduled a theatrical release for Bi Gan’s Resurrection on December 12, marking the director's follow-up to Kaili Blues and Long Day’s Journey Into Night with an ambitiously intricate anthology featuring the renowned Shu Qi. Ahead of the premiere, a teaser for the U.S. audience has been released.
As Zhuo-Ning Su noted in our Cannes review, “Through this collage-like approach, Bi Gan clearly departs from the narrative style of both Kaili Blues and Long Day’s Journey Into Night. One might argue that the cohesion of a continuous story is somewhat diluted by this shift, but what he endeavors to achieve goes beyond merely crafting a singular dreamscape; he engages with the philosophical and existential nuances of dreams, framing the past century of cinema as part of their narrative. Across the film’s five segments (including a prologue and epilogue), Bi presents five unique cinematic styles that confirm the silver screen has consistently served as a means for us to escape reality. Furthermore, as both creators and viewers of cinema, we play a role in sustaining the act of dreaming for our increasingly mundane species.”
Here’s the official synopsis: “In a realm where humanity has lost the capacity to dream, one creature remains captivated by the dwindling illusions of the dreamworld. This being, floating in a state of daydream, clings to visions invisible to others—until a woman arrives. Gifted with the rare ability to see these illusions as they truly are, she decides to enter the monster’s dreams, determined to unveil the truth concealed within.”
