Jason Bateman will be directing Tom Holland in the adaptation of John Grisham's The Partner.
In a news story that seems reminiscent of the 1990s, a new thriller by John Grisham is making its way to the big screen, and it looks like Emmy-winning Ozark star Jason Bateman will direct The Partner.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Tom Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man, would take on the roles of producer and lead actor in the project. Now, Universal Pictures has confirmed Bateman's appointment to helm The Partner, marking his third feature film after Bad Words (2013) and The Family Fang (2015).
Graham Moore, the Oscar-winning writer of The Imitation Game, has adapted Grisham’s 1997 novel, which follows Patrick Lanigan (Holland), a young partner at a Biloxi law firm who stages his own death to steal $90 million from a client at his crooked firm, leaving behind a wife and a newborn daughter. In South America, he finds love and happiness. However, when the client who was cheated out of the money realizes it has vanished from his offshore accounts, he becomes determined to track down the lawyer he believes is still alive. This forces the attorney to surrender to the FBI and confront the family and life he abandoned.
Bateman has enhanced his reputation since his last feature film, with Ozark receiving critical praise, directing two standout episodes of the lesser-known Stephen King series The Outsider for HBO, and his latest project, Black Rabbit, which he worked on both as a director and actor, is now streaming on Netflix.
The last significant movie adaptation of a John Grisham book came in 2003 with Runaway Jury, which concluded a successful era that included 90s hits like The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill, and The Rainmaker.
