Exclusive Trailer for Ellroy vs. L.A. Delves into the Psyche of a Noir Legend
Capturing the City of Angels like few others, James Ellroy, author of The Black Dahlia and L.A. Confidential, is the focus of the latest documentary by director Francesco Zippel (Friedkin Uncut). Titled Ellroy vs. L.A., the film includes an exclusive interview and archival footage that explores Ellroy’s personal and professional ties to the city. With its premiere set for the Rome Film Fest, we are excited to present the first trailer exclusively.
The synopsis reads: “A deep dive into the mind of noir legend James Ellroy. Featuring an exclusive interview alongside archival content, the documentary weaves his personal and artistic narrative with his distinct perspective on Los Angeles: the city of his birth, the source of his traumas, and an endless well of events, crimes, and characters that form the basis of his literary works. Ellroy’s rhythmic, jazz-inflected narration is interspersed with the music of the renowned Italian band Calibro 35.”
“Ellroy vs. L.A. stems from a personal motivation: to uncover the complicated relationship between James Ellroy and the city that shaped and indelibly influenced him. When I resolved to create this documentary, I realized that interviews alone wouldn't capture the essence. I aimed to construct an imaginative dialogue between Ellroy and Los Angeles, where the city not only responds but also challenges and sometimes embellishes the writer’s narrative. I sought to find L.A.'s voice in films, archival materials, and imagery that resonate with the spirit of a bygone era. My goal was for this film to illustrate the profound connection between the writer and his city, which, in their continuous quest for each other, ultimately merge into one.”
