U.S. Trailer for Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love That Remains, Iceland's Nominee for the Oscars
Hlynur Pálmason has created an impressive body of work that continues to evolve, and this year he presented The Love That Remains, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and will be released in theaters in 2025 after an awards-qualifying run. With the January 30 release date approaching, Janus Films has unveiled the new U.S. trailer and poster.
The synopsis reads: “Anna, an artist, and Magnús, a fisherman, reside with their three children and their charming sheepdog in the serene beauty of the Icelandic countryside. As the cracks in their marriage become evident, the couple tries to cling to the memories of their life together while grappling with profound and enduring affection. Filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason (Godland) infuses this stunning, intimate, and remarkably expansive portrayal of a marriage with unexpected humor and emotional depth, set against the breathtaking scenery of shifting seasons.”
Luke Hicks noted in his review, “Hlynur Pálmason’s fourth film takes a gentle, Malick-inspired turn from the director known for his cold and bleak dramas such as Winter Brothers, A White, White Day, and Godland. Compared to Pálmason’s previous works—which often burden viewers with a heavy seriousness, stemming from conflicts between brothers, suspected infidelity, or a desperate commitment to spread their message in the most inhospitable (or uninterested) places on Earth—The Love That Remains offers a light, cathartic exploration of love and loss, uplifting its audience like a cloud carries angels.”
