Comic Book Review – Supernatural Issue #2
Andrew Newton reviews Dynamite’s Supernatural #2…
The first issue of Dynamite’s Supernatural comic made an explosive entrance as Sam and Dean Winchester faced off against a troublesome Demonspawn, an Imp with issues related to sulfur and fire. It was a delightful and familiar return to the Winchester universe, but issue #2 raises the stakes as the brothers venture to Vegas to make some money and for Dean to try his luck at cards. As expected, things quickly become anything but ordinary, plunging the brothers back into the supernatural world. The issue intricately weaves the theme of luck throughout, especially highlighted in the dark opening that sets the mood before the brothers even arrive.
Greg Pak once again demonstrates his solid understanding of the characters. His portrayal of Dean is absolutely on point. Dean retains his cheeky and confident demeanor, delivering quick one-liners even in serious moments. Meanwhile, Sam continues to be empathetic and resolute whenever things begin to feel off. Greg has not exaggerated their traits; instead, he relies on what fans already understand, making the dialogue between the two seem natural rather than forced.
In terms of artwork, Pasquale Qualano, Vincenzo Federici, Alessandro Ronaldi, and Eder Messias deliver an impressive visual style. The brothers are more recognizable here than in the first issue, enhancing readers' immersion in the story. The atmosphere is well-captured, particularly in the Vegas scenes, where the artists cleverly balance neon glamour with darker supernatural elements. Clayton Crain’s cover is dark and striking, ensuring it catches the eye even before opening the comic.
What’s enjoyable about issue #2 is how it feels like a true Supernatural episode, merely conveyed through comic panels instead of a TV screen. Fans of the show will find much to appreciate here, and if you were hesitant after the first issue, this installment might offer a clearer vision of the series’ direction.
Supernatural #2 is a fun read that encapsulates the essence (pun intended) of the cherished TV series. It features a good blend of humor, suspense, and intrigue, and although my wife (a huge fan) still has some critiques regarding the characters' appearances, it represents a step in the right direction. It may not be flawless, but it is promising, and I look forward to issue #3.
Rating: Definitely worth 8/10 – enough to earn Castiel’s protection.
