Jean-Pierre Léaud Heads West in Exclusive Trailer for Luc Moullet’s A Girl Is a Gun
Luc Moullet may have waited over 60 years for greater recognition, but Cinema Guild has appropriately acknowledged this lesser-known figure of the French New Wave. Following a national retrospective, they are presenting what is arguably Moullet’s most popular film with a standalone showing that begins at Metrograph on December 19. If A Girl is a Gun gains its status simply by featuring Jean-Pierre Léaud as Billy the Kid, so be it—the film serves as a substantial introduction to Moullet's broader work while also standing out as one of the most effectively subversive westerns I can think of. In anticipation of this run, we’re excited to exclusively unveil a new trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Jean-Pierre Léaud and Rachel Kesterber star in the finest French Western ever created. Although never released in France, it was distributed in South America in an English-dubbed version by Moullet himself. Billy's dark story of desire and revenge oscillates dramatically between slapstick madness and delirious experimentation, reminiscent of Wellman's Yellow Sky, Vidor's Duel in the Sun, Godard's Week-end, and Garrel's La cicatrice interieure. In reinterpreting an old adage (cinema and a girl is indeed a gun), Moullet explores recurring themes—time, landscape, and exhaustion—with enthusiasm.”
