Disney is working on a live-action film centered around Gaston.

A good villain is hard to keep down. After being turned away by Belle in two versions of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and witnessing a long-planned small-screen spin-off fail to launch, we now hear from The Magic Kingdom (via Deadline) that Gaston is getting the live-action treatment with his own feature film.

While this is great news for the character, it seems that Luke Evans (The Desolation of Smaug), who was expected to reprise his role in the scrapped Disney+ series, will not be returning as the boastful huntsman.

Dave Callaham, known for scripting Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is reportedly developing a fresh and original interpretation of the character, who will be played by a different actor. No plot details have been revealed yet, but Deadline's report hints at a desire to create a film with a “swashbuckling” vibe.

Gaston made his debut in Disney’s 1992 animated classic, quickly becoming a beloved character thanks to his boorish demeanor and comical self-titled song, before Luke Evans portrayed him in the 2017 remake that grossed over a billion dollars.

Criterion has rescued another auteur film from the peculiar realm of streaming exclusivity, announcing a March 2026 release date for Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. It will undoubtedly look superior on their 4K disc compared to even the most stable stream on Apple TV+. While a wide release of this two-year-old film, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, is not in immediate danger, when I inquired with Rodrigo Prieto about a physical release, the film's cinematographer could only reply, "I don't know." In short, I'm looking forward to watching Killers in the best possible condition.

March will also see the release of 4K versions of Tsui Hark's The Blade, Claude Sautet's Classe tous risques, and an upgraded edition of Luis Buñuel's Viridiana. Additionally, there will be Blu-rays of Claude Lelouch's A Man and a Woman, a personal favorite of Mort Rifkin, and Lynne Littman's Testament.
