Mickey Rourke Turns Down 'Humiliating' GoFundMe Campaign to Prevent Eviction.
Mickey Rourke has distanced himself from a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $100,000 to help him avoid eviction from his West Hollywood residence.
The actor, known for his roles in The Wrestler and 9 1/2 Weeks, addressed the matter on Instagram, claiming he was unaware of the fundraiser, which was initiated by his manager, Kimberly Hines, along with her assistant.
“Something has come up that really frustrates and confuses me,” Rourke, 73, stated on Instagram Monday to his 489,000 followers. “Someone has set up a kind of foundation or fund asking for donations for me, like a charity, and that’s not who I am.
“If I needed money, I wouldn’t ask for any f—ing charity,” the Oscar nominee added, holding his dog Lucky. “I’d prefer to stick a gun up my a– and pull the trigger. Whoever did this, I don’t know why they did it — I don’t understand it. I wouldn’t have any idea what a GoFundMe foundation is in a million years. My life is very straightforward. I don’t rely on sources like that. And yes, it is embarrassing, but I’m sure I’ll move past it like everything else.”
He described the situation as “humiliating” and urged people not to contribute financially and to request refunds if they have already donated. He explained that his eviction resulted from a landlord-tenant conflict, noting that he ceased paying rent due to issues with the property where he had resided for several years.
“I’m not paying rent because there are mice, rats, and the floor is rotting. One bathtub has no water. … Two different sinks are also without water.”
He expressed determination to push forward.
“Like all storms, this will pass, and I’ll get back to work, and things will eventually return to whatever normal is,” he said.
Manager Clarifies GoFundMe Situation
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Rourke’s manager, Kimberly Hines, stated that she and an assistant created the campaign “with Mickey’s full consent,” but expressed willingness to return the contributions if Rourke prefers not to accept them.
Hines explained that she had been financially assisting Rourke and that he had been placed in a hotel with his three dogs while awaiting a move to a new apartment in Los Angeles’ Koreatown area.
She also mentioned that Rourke has never been adept at managing money and has been quite generous with his resources.
“He doesn’t really understand the concept of moderation,” she said. “He either has a lot or nothing. He lives from paycheck to paycheck. He’s also been incredibly generous to others. He bought an apartment for his ex-girlfriend, who was battling cancer, but didn’t buy one for himself. He’s given away a significant amount of his money to friends and has lent money to people. He didn’t have the upbringing or education to handle finances properly. Consequently, a lot of his money was spent or given away. He has very satisfied ex-girlfriends. He’s been very giving, but hasn’t managed his finances well.”
However, she also noted that Rourke has received several role offers since the news of the GoFundMe broke on Sunday.
“The silver lining is that he has received four movie offers since yesterday. People are reaching out to him with film offers now, which is wonderful because he hasn’t had calls in a long time,” she told THR.
Mickey Rourke Reflects on His Eviction Situation
In his post on Instagram, Mickey Rourke acknowledged his past mistakes but emphasized that he is in a better place now, saying his recent work reflects that progress.
“I’ve done a terrible job managing my career. I didn’t always handle things diplomatically; I’ve gone through over 20 years of therapy to overcome past damage, and I’ve worked hard to move past it. I am not that person anymore. But I can’t be the one to make that claim. You’d need to speak to the last several people I’ve worked with. Talk to Robert Rodriguez. Talk to Francis Coppola, Darren Aronofsky.”
Rourke collaborated with Rodriguez on 2005’s Sin City and 2014’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and he received some of the best reviews of his career for Aronofsky’s 2008 film The Wrestler, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He worked with Coppola on the 1983 film Rumble Fish.
