Review of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 3 – ‘The Squire’
Chris Connor evaluates the third episode of the Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
As we reach the midpoint of its inaugural season, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stands apart from its predecessors. This distinction allows it to feel, similar to the novellas it draws upon, like a truly novel addition to the Game of Thrones realm.
In 'The Squire,' the narrative again revolves around Ser Duncan and Egg, revealing more about the latter of these two unexpected companions. For the most part, this episode remains character-driven. However, when the action does occur during the jousting tournament, it impressively presents dynamic moments in brief, yet impactful, bursts.
It is admirable how much the creators manage to incorporate within the 30-minute runtime, without it coming across as hurried. The adaptation captures the essence of the source material, and, despite its brevity, expands and deepens the story. With plans for several more seasons exploring these characters' journeys, these small moments will prove significant.
For those unfamiliar with The Hedge Knight novella, the episode's conclusion alters the dynamics of what has been portrayed thus far. It sets the stage for a markedly different second half of the series, one that promises heightened action and stakes while continuing to focus on Duncan and Egg.
The dedication to honoring the origins of this specific series of novellas hopefully will prevent a situation akin to the sophomore season of House of the Dragon. However, for now, we should appreciate that A Song of Ice and Fire is bringing forth a show of this caliber, reminding us of the limitless possibilities this universe has at its peak. While it may be modest, it remains impressive nevertheless.
Hopefully, the latter part of the season can live up to the expectations set by the first three episodes, making this a memorable season.
