The 12 Greatest Movie Plot Twists Ever, Ordered from Least to Most Impressive
Here are the top movie plot twists, listed from least to most impressive.
As you will observe, our preference leans toward twists that alter the narrative over those that simply conclude it.
Nonetheless, we appreciate plot twists of every variety.

Many surprises in films aren’t genuine twists. A twist fundamentally alters our interpretation of the story, whereas a reveal is merely an unexpected turn.
We enjoy surprises—Silence of the Lambs, for instance, has plenty—but they don't make us reevaluate the entire narrative. The Crying Game features a well-known reveal, yet it doesn't significantly affect the story. Citizen Kane is famous for its surprising ending, but that too doesn't alter the film's essence; it’s almost a footnote.
Now, here are the 12 Best Movie Plot Twists, Ranked. Warning: major spoilers are ahead. If you wish to avoid the plot twists, just read the “The Plot” section for each entry and skip the rest. We hope you enjoy watching these films without any spoilers.
These twists are ranked from least to most impressive.
Number 12: Primal Fear
Paramount
The Plot: Defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere), seeking fame, takes on the case of Aaron Stampler (Ed Norton), a meek altar boy accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. Vail believes his client has developed a dissociative personality disorder due to years of abuse, including at the hands of the archbishop, leading him to embody the violent persona of Roy.
The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The film concludes with Aaron confessing to his lawyer that he faked his dissociative disorder, revealing that he is more like the aggressive Roy than the submissive Aaron.
Why It’s Good: Ed Norton genuinely makes it believable, despite seeming absurd on paper. This plot twist is ranked lowest on our list because we prefer twists that occur early enough for everyone to feel their impact. While we enjoy a twist ending, we find early or mid-movie twists even more satisfying.
Number 11: Frozen
The Plot: Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel) unintentionally reveals her concealed ice powers when she becomes frustrated with her sister Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell), who is eager to marry Prince Hans (voiced by Santino Fontana), a man she just met.
The Plot Twist: Late in the film, we discover that Hans doesn’t genuinely love Anna; he is cold-hearted. Therefore, the kiss we expect to resolve the story like a typical fairy tale does not occur.
Why It Works: We particularly appreciate a well-executed twist in a children's movie, especially one that teaches the importance of caution around strangers. Frozen masterfully sets up the twist with clever misdirection, highlighted in their duet “Love is an Open Door.”
Number 10: Chinatown

The Plot: In this neo-noir set in the 1930s, private investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is drawn into a convoluted scheme involving the Los Angeles water supply by Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway).
The Plot Twist (Spoiler): During a confrontation with Gittes, the distressed Evelyn discloses that Cross, her father, raped her at 15, resulting in the birth of Katherine, who she grimly calls “my sister and my daughter.”
Why It’s Good: This shocking revelation intensifies our understanding of Cross’s evils, as he victimizes both the land and his own daughter, enhancing the stakes of a plot that could have felt mundane. Most importantly, it appears early enough in the movie to create a lasting impact.
Number 9: Fight Club
20th Century Fox – Credit: C/O
The Plot: An unnamed protagonist (Edward Norton), dissatisfied with his aimless life, collaborates with charismatic stranger Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) to establish a fight club, which transforms into an anti-consumerism movement.
The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The character played by Norton has been Tyler Durden all along—a cooler imaginary friend.
Why It’s Good: For those who didn’t foresee it (and I certainly didn’t when I viewed Fight Club in 1999), it hit like a knockout punch. Although it came a bit late, it was effective. Once revealed, the first rule of Fight Club is to keep the surprise a secret.
Number 8: The Wizard of Oz
MGM – Credit: C/O
The Plot: After a tornado whisks her and her dog Toto from Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) lands in Oz. She embarks on a thrilling journey down the Yellow Brick Road with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion to seek the Wizard, hoping he will fulfill their wishes.
The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The Wizard (Frank Morgan) is a charlatan—a regular man using
