Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's second season will be its last.
The doors of the new Starfleet Academy have shut. Following the conclusion of its inaugural season, Paramount has revealed that the second season of *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy* will be its final one.
*Starfleet Academy* is a spin-off of *Star Trek: Discovery*, focusing on the first cohort of Starfleet cadets as they embark on their training at Starfleet headquarters on Earth. The series was created by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, featuring Holly Hunter as Academy chancellor Nahla Ake. It also included regular appearances from Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, alongside Mary Wiseman reprising her role as Sylvia Tilly and Robert Picardo’s holographic Doctor from *Voyager*.
“We are incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy* to life,” stated CBS Studios and Paramount+. “The series introduced viewers to a daring new set of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and broadened the *Star Trek* universe in exciting ways. We extend our gratitude to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and all the cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and everything accomplished with this series.”
Kurtzman also issued a heartfelt letter to the fans on behalf of himself and Landau, expressing their sentiments: “It has been our joy and privilege to help carry Gene Roddenberry’s remarkable vision forward with *Starfleet Academy*, thanks to the many dedicated individuals who invest their talents into this project every day with creativity and respect. We are currently in post-production for what will be the second and final season. We’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and the world will see the remarkable work of these extraordinary artists when season two premieres. We will finish strong.
Whether you're involved in *Star Trek* or are part of the incredible *Star Trek* fandom—its very heart and soul—the joy lies in exploring the boundaries of time, space, and human potential in service to Roddenberry’s transformative vision of the future. That unparalleled vision was powered by boundless optimism. *Star Trek* bets on the best in human nature. It dares to envision a society rich in “infinite diversity in infinite combinations,” devoid of war, hate, poverty, disease, and oppression, and committed to scientific inquiry and respect for all forms of life, whether they be carbon-based, silicon-based, green, or blue.
However, it's essential to recognize that Gene Roddenberry was not merely an idealistic dreamer. He was a decorated Army bomber pilot in the Pacific Theater, who witnessed the harsh realities of the darkest sides of human nature. His vision of the future transcended hope; it also served as a warning. In a tense and frightening era marked by intolerance and violence, *Star Trek* proclaimed: Look! We made it! But just barely. First, we had to leave behind those age-old scourges. It communicated that our glory as a species—and our hope for the future and the galaxy—is inextricably linked to what makes us dangerous to one another, to the world we inhabit, and to ourselves. This dual message—of hope and a warning—is not merely a lofty dream but a call to action to reconsider who we are from a different perspective.
Please don’t just take our word for it. Listen to Gene: “*Star Trek* was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not merely to tolerate, but to take genuine delight in differences in ideas and life forms. […] If we cannot learn to embrace and take joy in those small differences among our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve the chance to explore space and encounter the diversity likely to exist out there.”
With enduring hope for the realization of his vision for our future, for our children, their children, and every future cadet in Starfleet Academy: Live Long and Prosper.
With the cancellation of *Starfleet Academy*, this marks the conclusion of over a decade of Kurtzman’s leadership of *Star Trek*, a franchise that returned to television more than ten years after the end of *Star Trek: Enterprise* in 2005. While *Starfleet Academy* is coming to an end, fans can still anticipate the fourth and fifth seasons of *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds*, but there are currently no planned or announced *Star Trek* series following the conclusion of *SNW*, leaving the franchise in a state of uncertainty.
This exciting new chapter follows a new class of cadets as they train under the watchful and demanding guidance of Starfleet’s finest. Together, they will experience the ups and downs of academy life: forging unbreakable friendships, facing intense rivalries,
