Rosebush Pruning Trailer: Callum Turner, Riley Keough, Elle Fanning, Tracy Letts, and Others Face Family Challenges

      Recently launched at Berlinale, Karim Aïnouz's satirical film Rosebush Pruning, scripted by Efthimis Filippou, features Callum Turner, Riley Keough, Jamie Bell, Lukas Gage, Elena Anaya, Tracy Letts, Elle Fanning, and Pamela Anderson in a modern retelling of Marco Bellocchio’s Fists in the Pocket. Ahead of its release on MUBI later this year, the first trailer has now been unveiled.

      Here’s the synopsis: “Under the sun of Catalonia, a wealthy white American family lives in indulgent isolation, seeking love and validation through each other, their designer clothes, and pop music. When an outsider enters their world, hidden tensions rise to the surface, and family bonds are broken.”

      Rory O’Connor noted in his Berlinale review, “Transforming cruel or nihilistic characters into darkly alluring leads demands a surprisingly precise approach. We have become so accustomed to viewing it done effortlessly that a film like Rosebush Pruning serves as a useful reminder of how challenging this is to achieve. The latest work from Brazilian creator Karim Aïnouz (known for Futuro Beach and The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmão) invests much of its brisk runtime in creating a transgressive ambiance, yet it never fully develops its harsh characters or introduces an outsider who might elicit our sympathy or concern. You begin to question the point of playing these twisted games if there are no relatable individuals to unsettle.”
