The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past film is set to delve into additional untold stories from The Fellowship of the Ring.
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema will return to Middle-earth next December with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. However, this won’t be the only occasion the studios explore Peter Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy. It has now been announced that Stephen Colbert will follow his hosting role on CBS’ The Late Show by collaborating with Jackson, along with producers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, on a film tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.
The announcement was made yesterday in a video shared on social media by Jackson and Colbert in celebration of Tolkien Reading Day. Colbert will co-write the screenplay with his son Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens. The story is set 14 years after Frodo leaves Middle-earth, focusing on Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they attempt to retrace their original adventure, while Sam’s daughter Elanor uncovers a long-hidden secret that explains why the War of the Ring was nearly lost before it started.
Like The Hunt for Gollum, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past will draw from unused material in Tolkien’s epic, specifically chapters 3 to 8 of The Fellowship of the Ring, which recount the early phases of the Hobbits’ journey leading up to their arrival in Bree. This includes their passage through the Old Forest, their encounters with Tom Bombadil, and their meeting with Barrow-wights amid a sinister fog as they traverse the Barrow-downs.
Details about The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past are currently kept confidential, but it is likely that cast members Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd will reprise their roles as Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Additionally, if digital de-aging is utilized for flashbacks, Elijah Wood may return as Frodo.
