Currents Trailer: The Esteemed Drama by Milagros Mumenthaler Debuts This May

A selection at TIFF, NYFF, San Sebastian, and more, Milagros Mumenthaler’s acclaimed drama The Currents was acquired by Kino Lorber, who has scheduled its release for next month. In advance of its debut on May 29 at Film at Lincoln Center in NYC and June 5 at Laemmle Royal in LA, a new trailer has been released for the film, which features Isabel Aimé Gonzalez-Sola, Esteban Bigliardi, Claudia Sánchez, Ernestina Gatti, Jazmín Carballo, Patricia Mouzo, and Susana Saulquin.

Here’s the synopsis: “While in Switzerland to receive an award for her contributions to the fashion industry, Argentinian designer Lina (Isabel Aimé González Sola) is suddenly compelled to leap off a bridge into a frigid river. She survives the fall and returns to Buenos Aires, choosing not to inform anyone about the incident, but a transformation has occurred within her. Overcome by a debilitating fear of water, Lina struggles to reconnect with her previous roles as a wife, mother, and artist. She becomes increasingly distanced from her husband (Esteban Bigliardi) and her career, finding herself more isolated and fragile as she grapples with deep-seated existential questions. Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Milagros Mumenthaler, The Currents is a subtly captivating psychological mystery interwoven with dreamlike, hallucinatory elements, portraying a woman on the brink of breaking down.”

Jourdain Searles remarked in her NYFF review, “Writer-director Milagros Mumenthaler creates an intimate depiction of a woman grappling with her fractured identity, striving to avoid succumbing to madness. Mumenthaler recognizes that motherhood often involves a performative aspect, reminding the mother that her life is no longer solely her own. While the love for her daughter remains, she recoils from it, preoccupied with analyzing the current state of her life. In therapy, Lina reveals a fear of water’s power and the strength of a current that might sweep her away. It’s as if she has come to realize the fragility of her existence, and that the confidence which once defined her was lost when she jumped off the bridge. Despite the uniqueness of her fears, the emotions behind them are deeply relatable for any woman who feels overwhelmed by the inertia of her life.”
