The Currents Trailer: Milagros Mumenthaler’s Esteemed Drama Launches This May

Featured at TIFF, NYFF, San Sebastian, and other festivals, Milagros Mumenthaler’s praised drama *The Currents* has been acquired by Kino Lorber, which is set to release it next month. Ahead of its debut on May 29 at Film at Lincoln Center in NYC and June 5 at Laemmle Royal in LA, a new trailer has been unveiled for the film, which stars Isabel Aimé Gonzalez-Sola, Esteban Bigliardi, Claudia Sánchez, Ernestina Gatti, Jazmín Carballo, Patricia Mouzo, and Susana Saulquin.

Here’s the synopsis: “While accepting an award for her contributions to the fashion industry in Switzerland, Argentinian designer Lina (Isabel Aimé González Sola) is suddenly compelled to leap off a bridge into a freezing river. She survives the fall and returns to Buenos Aires, keeping the incident to herself, but she undergoes a significant internal change. Overwhelmed by a paralyzing fear of water, Lina struggles to reconcile with her previous roles as a wife, mother, and artist. She withdraws from her husband (Esteban Bigliardi) and career, growing more isolated and fragile as she faces deeply buried existential dilemmas. Directed by the acclaimed Milagros Mumenthaler, *The Currents* is a subtly intense psychological mystery that features dreamlike and hallucinatory elements, depicting a woman on the edge of collapse.”

Jourdain Searles remarked in her NYFF review, “Writer-director Milagros Mumenthaler crafts an intimate portrayal of a woman grappling with her fragmented identity, striving to avoid succumbing to madness. Mumenthaler recognizes that motherhood entails an aspect of performance, reminding the mother that her life is no longer solely her own. While her love for her daughter remains, she hesitates, focused on analyzing the current state of her life. In therapy, Lina conveys her fear of water's potential and the strength of a current that could sweep her away. It’s as if she has become aware of the fragility of her existence and realizes that the confidence she once had was lost when she jumped off the bridge. Despite the peculiar nature of her fears, the underlying emotions are painfully relatable to any woman who feels overwhelmed by the inertia of her life.”
