Kamal Aljafari Chronicles a Disappearing Landscape in Exclusive Trailer Premiere for With Hasan in Gaza

      After two and a half years of Israeli atrocities resulting in a continuous stream of distressing images, any documentation of Gaza’s history has gained immense value. It would be simplistic to evaluate Kamal Aljafari’s *With Hasan in Gaza* on this basis—filmed in 2001 during a relatively easier period, it provides a haunting experience. However, doing so would undermine his skillfully crafted work, which, captured on nostalgically inclined MiniDV, transports us from serene scenes of beaches, markets, and card games to vivid depictions of Israeli bombardment. Cinema Guild acquired *With Hasan in Gaza* last year, and we are excited to premiere a trailer in advance of the film’s release on May 29 at Metrograph.

      Here’s the official synopsis: “Recently uncovered are three MiniDV tapes depicting life in Gaza from 2001. This footage, filmed by Kamal Aljafari, stands as a testament to a time and place that has vanished. What began as a quest for a former prison mate from 1989—a man lost to time and conflict—turned into an unexpected journey from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains uncertain. As the camera navigates Gaza’s streets and scenery, it captures ephemeral moments of daily life—fragments of a reality that is now irreversibly changed. *With Hasan in Gaza* transforms this overlooked footage into a cinematic meditation on memory, loss, and the passage of time, depicting a past Gaza and lives that may never be rediscovered.”
