Maddie’s Secret Trailer: John Early Creates an Authentic Satire in His Directorial Debut
In one of the year’s most remarkable tonal accomplishments, John Early’s directorial debut, Maddie’s Secret—where he portrays a woman balancing her career aspirations, marriage, and a buried trauma—is both comical and deeply moving. This work blends satire and melodrama, revealing an emotional essence that subtly impacts the audience. Featuring a cast that includes Kate Berlant, Eric Rahill, Claudia O’Doherty, Conner O’Malley, and Vanessa Bayer, this selection from TIFF and New Directors/New Films will begin its theatrical release on June 19th, with Magnolia Pictures having unveiled the initial trailer.
The synopsis reads: “MADDIE’S SECRET is comedian, writer, and actor John Early’s critically lauded directorial debut, showcasing him as Maddie, an ambitious dishwasher who unexpectedly shoots to viral fame at a trendy food content creation firm. While her life appears idyllic—with a loving husband (Eric Rahill), a steadfast best friend (Kate Berlant), and a cupboard stocked with ethically sourced, woman-owned chili crisp—the increasing pressures at work threaten to unearth a hidden truth from her troubled history. This film artfully combines satire, melodrama, bold tonal shifts, and intimate performances, establishing a daring new voice in modern cinema.”
In his review, Jake Kring-Schreifels noted, “That Maddie’s Secret, Early’s first directorial effort, is his most significant undertaking yet isn’t simply due to his full drag portrayal of the title character. Let’s begin with that: when he makes his entrance jogging through Los Angeles, Early allows the audience a few moments to adjust to his transformation into a blonde aspiring chef. While this transformation isn’t just a cheap shock tactic, he understands the necessity of reshaping the humor and reality surrounding his altered gender, giving viewers a moment to align with Maddie and perceive her as more than merely an extravagant cosplay. In a satire like this, humor arrives heavily, but Early’s most impressive feat is culminating this adventure in a sincere, emotionally genuine place. He is not serving as a punchline but instead revealing a humorous yet painful truth.”
