André Is an Idiot (Tony Benna)
André Is an Idiot possesses a captivating sincerity that is commendable, even if not everything lands perfectly. The documentary introduces a straightforward and stark topic: accomplished advertising creative André Ricciardi failed to undergo a colonoscopy at the advised age, and when he finally did, he discovered he had Stage 4 Colon Cancer. In reaction to this grim diagnosis, André opted to create a film about facing death. It's a daring concept, reflecting many of his creative ideas for commercials and more. – Dan M. (full review)

The Drama (Kristoffer Borgli)
Some critics may argue that The Drama isn't centered on race, or if it is, it’s merely a coincidence of colorblind casting. There is a critical moment—the key point upon which the film's premise depends—early on that might resonate differently had it been voiced by a white character. Historically, it's associated more with troubled white American men. Nevertheless, this is a fictional film, and The Drama introduces us to a character not previously seen on the big screen. – Jourdain S. (full review)

Exit 8 (Genki Kawamura)
The simplicity of gameplay and the use of the trending liminal horror subgenre propelled Exit 8 to viral success, with over 1.5 million copies sold, further augmented by streamers whose gameplay videos have garnered millions of views. But how does one craft a feature film from a game that can be completed in a few minutes? Director and co-writer Genki Kawamura achieves this by embracing horror's classic technique of using allegory, turning Exit 8’s concept into a representation of how routines can ensnare us in cycles of negative behaviors. The film's protagonist is The Lost Man (Kazunari Ninomiya), who we observe during his daily commute in the Tokyo subway. While maneuvering through the complex maze of pedestrian tunnels, he receives a call from his recent ex-girlfriend revealing her pregnancy, prompting him to decide if he wants her to keep the baby. – C.J. Ragamuffin (Kaitlyn Mikayla)
In her debut short film, this director draws on her experiences as a childhood motocross champion. Ragamuffin (Sundance, 2025) centers on a 12-year-old dirtbike rider navigating a male-dominated environment while grappling with her own femininity. Filmed on grainy 16mm, Mikayla’s work provides an authentic and vibrant portrayal of life at the racetrack.

Send Help (Sam Raimi)
New films by Sam Raimi are rare these days, but whenever one emerges, the discussion about whether he embodies a mean-spirited directing style inevitably resurfaces. His last straightforward horror film, 2009’s Drag Me to Hell, is often cited in this debate, despite its protagonist being someone audiences typically root against: a loan manager eager for promotion who invites evil into her life after making an elderly woman homeless. Released after the 2008 financial crisis, it was a characteristically quirky and grotesque ghost story that resonated with its time, gradually establishing its place among Raimi’s most esteemed films in later years, remaining relevant. Send Help is being strongly promoted as Raimi's first horror project since then, but is far more intriguing when framed as a return to that bleak vein of corporate satire wherein anyone aspiring to ascend the corporate ladder is ruthlessly penalized for their blatant capitalist ambitions. – Alistair R.
