The BBC has announced its collaboration with UK production company Wheel in Motion and Japan’s KADOKAWA Corporation to create a live-action adaptation of Eiko Kadono’s cherished fantasy novel, Kiki’s Delivery Service, originally published in 1985. This story was previously adapted into animated form by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli in their acclaimed 1989 film. The new series will consist of ten half-hour episodes, with Irena Brignull (The Boxtrolls, The Little Prince) handling the writing duties.

“I’m excited to be involved in bringing Kiki to life in this new adaptation, as she is one of fiction’s great female characters,” said Irena Brignull. “Kiki embodies the magic of reinvention and human connection, illustrating what one can achieve by stepping boldly and generously into the world to discover a sense of purpose.”

Eiko Kadono added, “Kiki is embarking on another adventure in a new world. In this BBC Studios production, I invite you to join Kiki in exploring the joy of life and the wonder that resides within you. I believe this will be an excellent show, and I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing the series come to fruition. I can’t wait to hop on my broom and meet the new Kiki.”

Grainne McNamara of BBC Studios Kids & Family expressed, “We are excited to collaborate on bringing Kiki’s Delivery Service to life for a new generation on a global platform. Eiko Kadono’s cherished tale has enchanted audiences worldwide, and this ambitious live-action adaptation provides a unique chance to reimagine its magic, warmth, and sense of adventure.”

Kiki’s Delivery Service follows the remarkable journey of Kiki, a 13-year-old witch who has lived a protected life until she ventures out to find her place in the world. Moving to the port town of Koriko, she starts a delivery service. Throughout her journey, her optimism and kindness help her form unexpected friendships, and with each delivery, she conveys more than just packages; she delivers connection, hope, and a feeling of belonging.
