Will Poulter Explores an American Crisis in the First Trailer for Union County
While Will Poulter had a lot of fun in I Love Boosters earlier this summer, his upcoming role is one of his most dramatically impressive. Adam Meeks’ feature debut, Union County, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, is set to be released by Oscilloscope Pictures on August 14. The film stars Poulter alongside Noah Centineo as brothers dealing with a community affected by the opioid crisis. The cast also includes Elise Kibler, Emily Meade, Annette Deao, and Danny Wolohan, and the first trailer and poster have been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “Will Poulter and Noah Centineo give exceptional performances as brothers Cody and Jack Parsons, each navigating a court-mandated drug rehabilitation program in a rural area of Ohio severely impacted by the opioid epidemic. For the first time since their challenges began, they are filled with hope and supported by a dedicated counselor (Annette Deao), as they strive for a brighter, sober future. Poulter and Centineo blend effortlessly with a supporting cast mainly consisting of non-professional actors who share their real-life experiences, struggles, and hopes while they navigate the program. Ohio-native filmmaker Adam Meeks crafts a film rich in realism, offering an honest and compassionate portrayal of a battle being waged across America and the camaraderie that emerges on its front lines.”
Jake Kring-Schreifels wrote in his review, “Last summer, during The Bear’s fourth season, Will Poulter walked into the show’s namesake Chicago restaurant and left the kitchen staff in awe with his striking looks. This reaction isn’t new for the tall British actor—over the past few years, his cool blue eyes, angular figure, and charming accent have made him accustomed to attention. Regardless of the supporting role, when he enters a room, the atmosphere shifts. However, in Union County, writer-director Adam Meeks’ confident directorial debut, Poulter attempts a different approach. Portraying recovering drug addict Cody Parsons, he enters a courthouse with a scruffy beard, messy hair, and slouched posture, dulling his radiant presence into a muted tone. No one around him even glances his way, let alone looks impressed.”
