After a highly productive period from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s, Joe Swanberg has decreased his output, but he is now making a comeback with his first feature in quite a while. *The Sun Never Sets*, featuring Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson, debuted at SXSW earlier this year and is set to release in theaters starting in Chicago on August 28, followed by a wider release the following week. In anticipation of its premiere, IFC has released the first trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Wendy (Dakota Fanning) is convinced she’s completely satisfied in her relationship until her older boyfriend, Jack (Jake Johnson), who is divorced with children, suggests they take a break to ensure she’s truly ready to let go of the idea of marriage and having kids. During this break, Wendy unexpectedly encounters her ex, Chuck (Cory Michael Smith), who awakens her playful and spontaneous nature, and suddenly seems to desire a family. The three navigate a chaotic, confusing, and often humorous love triangle, illustrating that the quest for love is both beautiful and complicated. The film was shot on 35mm film in Alaska.”
