Julian Trailer: Cato Kusters' Highly Praised TIFF Selection Releases in August
An acclaimed directorial debut at TIFF last year, Cato Kusters’ "Julian" was acquired by Strand Releasing and is set for release this summer. The drama, produced by Lukas and Michiel Dhont, will hit theaters starting August 7 at NYC’s IFC Center, and a new trailer has been unveiled.
Here’s the synopsis: “Following an unexpected meeting, Fleur and Julian fall deeply in love. Shortly after Julian proposes, Fleur begins to entertain a bold but challenging idea. Gradually, she develops a plan to marry in every country where she and her soon-to-be wife are permitted to do so. Driven by their passion and an increasing sense of urgency, they take a significant leap. However, after just four weddings, their journey faces an inevitable and painful conclusion.”
In his TIFF review, Jake Kring-Schreifels remarked, “It’s a fleeting, transient moment. At a concert, Fleur (Nina Meurisse) locks eyes with Julian (Laurence Roothooft) just as she takes her seat, and in that instant, a spark ignites. What starts as fascination and mutual attraction quickly evolves into courtship, culminating in a sudden engagement toast at dinner with friends. As the couple celebrates, Fleur interrupts the festivities with an announcement: she and her future wife will not just marry in France—they plan to marry in every country that recognizes same-sex unions, all 22 of them. They decide that a serendipitous connection can also serve as a statement. Though their love may be impulsive, it doesn’t need to be subdued.”
