Eleanor Coppola's documentary about the creation of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette will be released soon.
Following Priscilla and her latest documentary Marc by Sofia, anticipation has been growing for Sofia Coppola's next project, especially after news of a potential reunion with Kirsten Dunst was called off. Meanwhile, a fresh look at the making of one of her most acclaimed films has finally come to fruition.
MUBI has acquired global rights to Making Marie Antoinette, a documentary directed by Eleanor Coppola (who passed away in 2024) and produced by Sofia Coppola. This project, which was announced a few years ago, features an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse of Sofia Coppola’s Oscar-winning Marie Antoinette, shot by her mother, Eleanor Coppola, and produced by Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, Youree Henley, and Sofia Coppola. The footage was edited by Aaron Matthews with contributions from Eleanor’s close friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird. The film received financing from OUR FILMS (A Mediawan Company), Mediawan Rights, and Entourage Pictures.
The synopsis states: "In 2005, Sofia Coppola released her third feature film, Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, at the Palace of Versailles, the first film ever permitted to shoot there. Acclaimed documentarian Eleanor Coppola was on set with her and filmed around eighty hours of footage, capturing her daughter’s process in making the movie. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Marie Antoinette’s release and honor her mother’s wishes, Coppola edited this previously unseen footage. Making Marie Antoinette highlights the artistry involved in the film, showcases legendary costume designer Milena Canonero at work, and explores the experience of being a young female director at that time. The outcome is an intriguing look at the filmmaking process of this landmark film and an unexpectedly intimate family story. In the film, Eleanor Coppola’s voice is provided by Academy Award® nominee Diane Lane, who reads excerpts from Eleanor’s journals reflecting on her experiences on set and her relationship with her daughter."
Efe Cakarel, MUBI’s Founder and CEO, commented, “Sofia is one of the defining filmmakers of her generation, with a distinct voice and sensibility. Marie Antoinette was bold, beautiful, irreverent, and highly influential. To revisit it now through Eleanor Coppola’s perspective as both a filmmaker and a mother is deeply moving. We are proud to share this intimate and extraordinary portrait with audiences worldwide.”
Sofia Coppola remarked, “During lockdown, my mother and I began reviewing her footage. It was always her dream to transform what she filmed into a full-length documentary. Being on set both as a filmmaker and my mother made it profoundly moving to revisit the material and see our shoot through her eyes. I’m incredibly thankful to Lorenzo and OUR FILMS for their assistance in bringing this project together, and I couldn't be happier that Efe and MUBI will be distributing it.”
Lorenzo Mieli from OUR FILMS stated, “Eleanor Coppola is an exceptional documentarian, as shown by Hearts of Darkness. I feel privileged to have contributed to this documentary, and the mother-daughter dynamic gives significant depth to the film. Like OUR FILMS, MUBI is dedicated to filmmakers, so this feels like an ideal home for such a unique film.”
MUBI plans to announce a release date soon, and given the timing of this news, it’s likely there will be a fall festival circuit associated with the film's 20th anniversary.
