Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will have a limited theatrical release for the awards season.
Paramount has made a slight adjustment to their initial decision regarding the streaming release of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, shifting it to a limited theatrical engagement. The film, which is a sequel to the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series and continues the stories of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko a few years after the show's end, was originally set for a theatrical release this fall. However, Paramount later changed its plans, transitioning it to a Paramount+ exclusive and moving the release date to next week on July 25th, which disappointed many fans.
Now, the company has slightly backtracked on that change, offering a theatrical run that will span only one week, starting on July 24th, and will take place in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York City. Additionally, there will be a screening at the San Diego Comic Con on July 24th, but the theatrical release will only last through the 30th.
According to Variety, this decision was made to position the film for the 2027 awards season, as a theatrical release is necessary for nominations such as best animated feature, among others. This move is seen as a smart strategy for the company, considering they had initially canceled the theatrical release entirely, and it adds to the film's existing controversy due to a complete leak by a now-arrested individual.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is based on the animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, and it follows Avatar Aang, the last Airbender, as he discovers an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the support of his friends, he embarks on a worldwide journey to locate it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens the peace they have fought hard to establish.
The voice cast of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender includes Eric Nam as “Aang,” Dave Bautista as “Tagah,” Jessica Matten as “Katara,” Román Zaragoza as “Sokka,” Steven Yeun as “Zuko,” Dionne Quan as “Toph,” and Dee Bradley Baker voicing “Appa” and “Momo,” alongside Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng, and Ken Jeong. The film will debut globally on Paramount+ on Saturday, July 25th.
