How Camera Operator Serhii Koshelenko Introduces a Unique Cinematic Style to Reality Television

      Ukrainian cinematographer and director of photography Serhii Koshelenko is pioneering a fresh approach to the visual language of reality television, blending authentic, unscripted narratives with a cinematic style in the shots. His ability to convey meaning to the audience and capture their interest stems from a profound understanding of human behavior in front of a camera, combined with expertise in lighting.

      With over fifteen years of experience in television production, his portfolio includes popular Ukrainian shows as well as the American PBS documentary series Start Up, which has been nominated for multiple Daytime Emmy Awards. He has collaborated with The Vessel studio and created video content for Gunna and Coco Jones. Koshelenko is a member of the Society of Camera Operators and the Television Academy. We spoke with him about his development of a unique methodology for camera work in reality television.

      MovieMaker: What makes a modern reality TV camera operator more than just a technical expert?

      Serhii Koshelenko: Today's camera operator acts as a co-author of the narrative. The role goes beyond merely adjusting exposure or capturing events; it involves shaping how the audience perceives the subject, as well as understanding their character and emotions. The art of storytelling is tied to the operator’s skills.

      In reality TV, moments cannot be recreated. You only get one opportunity to capture a shot. When a subject begins to cry, you must swiftly move in for a close-up to express the emotion present at that moment. These are not trained actors who can redo a scene on cue—they are everyday people. If a cast member enters into a conflict or leaves suddenly, the operator must foresee this and be prepared to adapt to ensure nothing is missed.

      A skilled reality camera operator remains intensely focused on the current shot while simultaneously strategizing a backup plan.

      Using appropriate lighting is crucial for enhancing the story and highlighting the emotions. If a subject has a challenging personality, cooler light may work better; conversely, warmer tones suit those who exude warmth and positivity.

      MovieMaker: Can you share your experience working on popular shows in Ukraine?

      Serhii Koshelenko: I have been involved in significant projects such as The Bachelor, MasterChef, X Factor, The Biggest Loser, and several others. I served as the director of photography on Single Dad Seeking and contributed to shaping the visual style of Supermom. It's gratifying to watch an episode I am no longer involved with and still recognize the familiar framing.

      These experiences have sharpened my ability to quickly respond to changes within the frame. I have dealt with large-scale concerts, observational documentaries, psychological interviews, conflicts, intense emotions, and considerable movement within the shot. My focus on what matters has become instinctive. This background allows me to observe not just what the lens captures, but also what happens just outside the frame or above, as if I possess a third eye that adapts to changes.

      Working on well-known shows has also taught me about the importance of clear team communication: when everyone on set is aware of their role and can signal partners discreetly about unexpected developments, everything functions smoothly.

      I have also taken on the role of lead operator on large productions. On one occasion, I coordinated the efforts of twelve camera operators and five lighting technicians. This entails significant responsibility—not just for my work but for everyone else's outcomes. Planning, brainstorming with the team, and energizing everyone before production requires a substantial amount of energy. Yet, I truly love what I do.

      MovieMaker: You have spent almost five years working in the United States. What have you noticed about how the work is structured here?

      Serhii Koshelenko: In the U.S., I became involved in the PBS documentary series Start Up, which I worked on for the last three seasons. The show has received multiple Daytime Emmy Award nominations.

      I strive to combine the honesty of documentary filmmaking with a cinematic perspective. My goal is to enable the camera to narrate the story without relying on excessive equipment.

      What I’ve observed here is a clear delineation of responsibilities, mutual respect among team members, and an open atmosphere for creative discussion. Each specialist is accountable for their scope of work, yet everyone works cohesively. If an idea is sound, it can be easily discussed with the director or producer, and there’s always an opportunity to be heard.

      MovieMaker: You have developed your own lighting methodology for reality shows. Why do you believe this is important for the industry?

      Serhii Koshelenko: Over time, I recognized a significant gap in camera operator education. While there is abundant information on narrative filmmaking and traditional camera techniques, systematic guidance on an operator's role in reality TV is lacking.

      My methodology encompasses practical experience: preparation for shoots, site analysis, attention to important details, and constructing a lighting scheme tailored to each story.
