Next month will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary The Transformers: The Movie, the franchise's first feature film, which significantly altered its trajectory. Hasbro has unveiled a new trailer for the film's Apology Tour, complete with an exciting update.
The re-release for this milestone anniversary will begin on September 17th in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Germany, and the United States, with additional international markets to be announced soon. When it hits theaters, fans will be able to enjoy a brand new scene following the credits that hints at Optimus Prime's fate in a way that might differ from what G1 Transformers enthusiasts would expect.
The Transformers: The Movie premiered between the second and third seasons of the original G1 series and sparked significant backlash due to its choice to kill off numerous original characters, including Optimus Prime, in one of the most heartbreaking moments ever depicted for a children's hero. Hasbro received an influx of letters from parents and fans voicing their outrage over Prime's demise. Peter Cullen, the voice actor for Optimus Prime, later mentioned that he didn't realize how beloved the Autobot leader was until after his death in the film.
In response, Hasbro quickly modified their storyline in the third season of Transformers, ultimately bringing Optimus back in the two-part episode 'The Return of Optimus Prime.' Since then, it has become a recurring theme in Transformers series and films to eliminate Optimus, with the shortest duration of his death being nearly 30 seconds.
