Olivia Colman Introduces Alexander Skarsgård in the First Trailer for Wicker
A unique love story this year, Wicker by Alex Huston Fischer & Eleanor Wilson presents a fable where a woman (Olivia Colman) requests a wicker husband (Alexander Skarsgård) from the local basket-maker (Peter Dinklage). The film, which also features Elizabeth Debicki and is shot by Lol Crawley (The Brutalist), is set to debut on October 23 from Black Bear Pictures, and the first trailer has been released.
The synopsis reads: “An audacious comedic fable about sex, marriage, and the absurdities of social conventions, WICKER narrates the original love story of an ostracized fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who has a husband crafted by the local basket-maker (Peter Dinklage). When her wicker husband (Alexander Skarsgård) turns out to be more remarkable than she ever envisioned, his soulful essence and distinct abilities awaken something within her, triggering a surge of jealousy, intrigue, and turmoil that endangers the very foundation of village life.”
Kent M. Wilhelm remarked in his Sundance review, “This sophomore film is a whimsical period piece set in a time and place that never truly existed. Based on Ursula Wills-Jones's short story The Wicker Husband, their screenplay critiques patriarchal relationship dynamics and traditions. The world they create acts as a distorted reflection of reality, presenting a heightened environment that feels authentic despite its anachronistic elements. The characters lack proper names; the men are identified by their occupations, while the women are named by their relations to those men, as a satirical nod to the traditional practice of women taking their husbands' surnames. We witness the cruelty of this society through the eyes of an outsider—someone who defies its norms and becomes the target of mockery for doing so. Despite the bitterness, there’s a touch of sweetness in the raucous and irreverent way the village interacts, cleverly adding humor to their harshness. Along with sharp cultural satire, Wicker boasts one spectacular surprise: a wicker version of Alexander Skarsgård.”
