Dave Bautista is in discussions to take over the role of Kratos in the God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst.

      Due to lead actor Ryan Hurst being unable to continue in the role following an on-set injury during filming, it appears that Amazon and Sony may have identified his successor for the character of Kratos in the forthcoming God of War series. According to Variety, Dave Bautista, known for his role in Guardians of the Galaxy, is in discussions to join the adaptation of the video game.

      Development of the series based on the popular PlayStation franchise has been underway at Amazon since 2022, with Ryan Hurst (from Sons of Anarchy) initially announced to play Kratos, and Callum Vinson cast as Atreus in February of this year. This announcement was paired with a first glimpse of the two actors in their respective roles. Unfortunately, Hurst sustained a bicep injury while filming in June, prompting Sony and Amazon to decide to recast rather than postpone production until 2027.

      In addition to having the physical capabilities essential for the role on such short notice, Bautista has a solid working relationship with Amazon MGM, having starred in the Prime Video films My Spy, My Spy: The Eternal City, and The Wrecking Crew, as well as his involvement in the upcoming Road House sequel and Highlander remake.

      God of War, written and showrun by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind), has been granted a two-season order by Prime Video. The official logline states: “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Throughout their adventures, Kratos seeks to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus strives to guide his father in becoming a better human.”
