Which star will triumph in 2026?
Based on the films released in 2026, it seems that cinema is dominated by a select group of actors who are monopolizing box office successes. But who will emerge as the standout star of the year?
So far, 2026 has been exceptional for box office revenues, with five films each earning over a billion worldwide. In contrast, only four films reached that milestone throughout 2025, when Ne Zha 2 skewed the statistics by earning $2.2 billion, predominantly in its home country, China, contributing around $70 million from elsewhere. This year's substantial rise in ticket sales is impressive, especially before the arrival of Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday.
In addition to increased ticket sales and the indication that Gen Z audiences are embracing indie horror films like Obsession and Backrooms, 2026 has revealed another intriguing trend. When it comes to mainstream star-driven films, you might notice a limited number of actors are prominently featured. Yes, the same familiar faces appear consistently across various projects.
From Jon Bernthal and Anne Hathaway to Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson, the notable absence in 2026 has been Glen Powell, who has seemingly appeared in every film prior to this year. However, Glen hasn't been completely inactive; he starred in How to Make a Killing earlier this year, though it didn't make much of an impact. On a brighter note for Glen, he lent his voice to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is one of the billion-dollar hits. Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal has been less active with his underwhelming Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu film but is set to return as Reed Richards in Avengers: Doomsday.
Tom Holland, however, sought to headline multiple billion-dollar films. In addition to portraying Matt Damon’s character's son in The Odyssey, he reprised his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day just weeks later. With this busy schedule, Holland is likely to surpass $2 billion in box office earnings, which may climb to over $3 billion.
He isn’t alone in this trend; Zendaya, his partner, is also part of both films, although her role in The Odyssey is somewhat lesser. Yet, it’s worth noting that Zendaya has practically been involved in every film released in 2026. In addition to her film roles, she is starring in the hit TV series Euphoria while balancing The Drama, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. To top it off, she will be in Dune: Part Three this Christmas. Ironically, there wasn’t any release featuring her last year, which is surprising.
So, does Zendaya seal the title for 2026? The anticipation surrounding Denis Villeneuve’s Dune might allow her to claim three billion-dollar hits. Moreover, The Drama achieved over $100 million globally against its modest budget. Can we expect a Spidey cameo in Doomsday? If Holland appears, it might only be a brief role, so attributing significant box office success to him could be a stretch. If he ends up part of $4 billion in box office earnings within six months, it might inflate his ego to a point where they'd need to redesign his Spidey mask.
That said, Robert Pattinson is set to be the standout star for 2026. Focusing purely on box office numbers, Pattinson is poised to excel with his versatility, and if awards season favors any of these young stars, ‘Battinson’ is likely to be the frontrunner. It’s fair to say that while Zendaya has made significant contributions, she may not have showcased the same range as Pattinson. Often, leading actors don’t get the opportunity to play transformative roles, which typically fall to character actors. Pattinson has adeptly transitioned from Twilight to tackle a variety of eclectic and diverse characters, including leading roles in indie, arthouse, and mainstream cinema.
In 2025, it seemed Pattinson might be taking too many risks with some of his choices not hitting their mark. Die My Love received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office, as did Mickey 17, which represented lesser achievements for respected directors Lynne Ramsay and Bong Joon Ho. Still, Pattinson remains sought after by high-profile directors, and his efforts to shake off his Batman role made some of last year’s endeavors feel forced, particularly with Mickey 17's quirky tone.
Kristoffer Borgli’s The Drama presented a different challenge, focusing more intensely on character, with dynamic energy fueled by strong performances from Pattinson and Zendaya. Pattinson seems eager to engage in roles that require intensity, having truly pushed boundaries in recent years, especially with The Lighthouse. That film paired him with the powerful Willem Dafoe, and emerging without being overshadowed was a testament to his talent. His performance shines as he prepares for 2026, particularly with his scene-stealing
