Harrison Ford comments on the box office performance of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: "Things happen!"
As he prepares to enter a major franchise for the first time with Captain America: Brave New World, Harrison Ford has been reflecting on his last appearance in another legendary film series, 2023’s critically panned Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny.
In a conversation with The Wall Street Journal, the Hollywood icon discussed the disappointing box-office performance of the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones saga. Ford candidly remarked that “Shit happens,” and added, “I was the one who felt there was another story to tell. When Indy had faced the repercussions of the life he had to lead, I wanted one more opportunity to pick him up, dust him off, and put him back out there, lacking some of his vitality, to see what transpired.”
What transpired was that the James Mangold-directed film debuted with a lackluster $60.4 million at the domestic box office, ultimately earning a franchise low of $383 million globally. Nevertheless, Ford expressed his contentment with his farewell performance as Indy, stating that he was glad to have made the film.
He had no similar creative involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealing that he accepted the role of General Thunderbolt Ross, previously portrayed by the late William Hurt, without reading a script: “I saw enough Marvels to recognize actors I respected enjoying themselves.”
