The first image and plot details have been revealed for Mark Jenkin's "Rose of Nevada," featuring George MacKay and Callum Turner.
After Bait and Enys Men established themselves as two of the most tactile and unique films in recent years, director Mark Jenkin is broadening his horizons with his new project. The Cornish filmmaker quietly completed production this past summer on his time-travel mystery drama Rose of Nevada, which furthers the auteur trajectory of George MacKay, who starred in The Beast and The End, alongside Callum Turner. Deadline has now shared the first image and some plot details.
Here’s the synopsis: “In an overlooked fishing village, a boat mysteriously resurfaces in the old harbor. The Rose of Nevada, which vanished at sea with its crew 30 years ago, has returned. For those who remember, it’s a portent. The Rose of Nevada must set out to sea once more, perhaps then the fortunes of the beleaguered village will change. Nick (MacKay) takes a job on the boat to support his young family. Accompanying him is the newly arrived Liam (Turner), who joins the crew in a bid to escape his past. They venture out to sea, and after a successful voyage, return to the harbor. However, something feels off. They have slipped back in time, and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew.”
“We’re thrilled to present this atmospheric and unsettling chiller from the brilliant Mark Jenkin at EFM,” remarked Protagonist’s Bishop. “The eerie mystery of Rose of Nevada is sure to captivate discerning global audiences, featuring an outstanding British ensemble cast.”
Ama Ampadu, Senior Production and Development Executive at the BFI, stated: “Mark Jenkin has a distinctive vision and a unique filmmaking style, and we are excited to support him and his longtime producer, Denzil Monk, in undertaking this larger and more ambitious project. We can’t wait for his devoted fans and new global audiences to experience this hauntingly beautiful, time-bending sea-fishing story that skillfully intertwines Cornish identity with universal themes.”
Farhana Bhula, Head of Creative at Film4, added: “Mark is a truly unique filmmaker, and it’s a privilege to support him, Denzil, and their talented cast and crew in bringing his most ambitious project to life. Filmed entirely on location in Cornwall, Rose of Nevada melds Mark’s innovative cinematic approach with a gripping story and remarkable performances to create a spellbinding experience.”
