Avatar: The Last Airbender is set to release a new novel series titled Avatar Legends, which will center around the "unsung heroes" of the franchise.

More spin-off novels set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender are on the way in a new series named Avatar Legends. This series will highlight “the unsung heroes” from both Avatar and The Legend of Korra, with the first book to be released this summer by Judy I. Lin, author of Book of Tea.

Entitled Avatar Legends: City of Echoes, the novel will center on Jin, a character who made a brief appearance in the second season of the animated series as a resident of the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se. She was introduced in the episode “Tales of Ba Sing Se” as a regular customer at Iroh and Zuko’s tea shop while they were posing as refugees from the war against the Fire Nation. Jin went on a date with Zuko, though it did not lead to anything romantic.

“Surprise! I am writing a book set in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe!” Lin announced on her website. “It’s part of a series featuring the unsung heroes in the ATLA and Legend of Korra animated series. It’s called Avatar Legends: City of Echoes, and it will be released on July 22, 2025. Yes, this summer! I’m eager to share more details soon!       The novel will delve into Jin’s backstory as Ba Sing Se transforms into a totalitarian regime, governed by its secret police while trying to deny the existence of the war against the Fire Nation and keeping its King as a powerless figurehead. City of Echoes will follow Jin as she attempts to manage the tension in the city and protect the family that took her in when they encounter trouble with the city's criminal underworld. The official synopsis states:

There is no war outside of these walls.

This is the belief imposed on the citizens of Ba Sing Se, but Jin understands the truth. As a refugee who lost her parents to the Fire Nation, she is haunted by her past. Now, she strives to stay unnoticed in the Lower Ring while caring for her sick grandfather and juggling school with her need to survive. Her sole source of joy is her best friend Susu, whose family treats Jin as one of their own, and whose bakery she assists with deliveries.

Her life takes a drastic turn when Susu’s father loses the bakery in a gamble, pushing Susu to take on a contract in the Upper Ring to settle the family’s debts. Jin is determined to help her friend—whatever the cost. A series of events triggered by her desperate promise introduces Jin to Xuan, a haughty boy from the Middle Ring linked to the Silver Fangs, a powerful player in the city’s black market. The further Jin explores her double life, the more she uncovers about Susu’s involvement in a conspiracy that is darker and more perilous than she ever imagined.

As murmurs of the Avatar’s existence within the city grow, the Fire Nation draws ever nearer. With Ba Sing Se on the edge of revolution, Jin must confront the formidable forces that dominate her city and risk everything for the friend she is resolved to save.

This marks the latest expansion of the Avatar franchise. Besides Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the animated series and other spin-off novels about previous Avatars, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon are working on three animated Avatar: The Last Airbender films, with the first focusing on Aang during the time between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
