28 Years Later Trailer: Danny Boyle and Alex Garland Introduce a New Era of Zombies
Following the release of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later in the 2000s, prepare for an entirely new trilogy in the zombie franchise. Danny Boyle, making a return to major filmmaking six years after his Beatles-influenced film Yesterday, is working on 28 Years Later, co-written with Alex Garland. The cast includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. As we anticipate its release on June 20, 2025, the first striking trailer has been unveiled.
The synopsis states: “Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award®-nominated writer Alex Garland come together for 28 Years Later, a chilling new tale set in the universe established by 28 Days Later. Nearly thirty years have passed since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons lab, and those still quarantined have found ways to survive among the infected. One group of survivors resides on a small island linked to the mainland by a heavily guarded causeway. When a member of this group ventures into the treacherous mainland, he uncovers secrets, marvels, and terrors that have transformed not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
In an interview with Nick Newman last year, cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle shared, “Danny is extremely enthusiastic about the movement of the camera. He has a strong understanding of light, but for him, camera movement is essential—it’s the lifeblood of filmmaking. I am very meticulous about the reasons for camera movement in every project I work on and in everything I view. This common interest united us. After working on The Beach with Darius, who is a true master of cinematography in many respects, Danny wanted to explore new approaches based on what he experienced then. This led to two short television projects using multiple digital cameras—they thought I was some kind of digital wizard, which I’m not—and then evolved into 28 Days Later, which became a landmark film, correct?”
