Review of Season 2 of Poker Face

Chris Connor offers his thoughts on the second season of Poker Face…

Rian Johnson’s Poker Face was incredibly well-received upon its debut in 2023. This crime comedy, characterized by its distinct personality, followed Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale as she navigated her way through various predicaments while evading criminal organizations. The show's success solidified Johnson's reputation as a unique voice in the genre, building on the acclaim of his Knives Out films and earlier projects like Brick.

After a two-year hiatus, the series returns for its much-anticipated second season, featuring Charlie still on the run from the five families and once more stumbling into uncomfortable situations. Like the first season, there is a variety of guest stars, including Awkwafina, Giancarlo Esposito, Katie Holmes, and Richard Kind, among others. These appearances feel integral to the storyline rather than just cameo roles from famous names.

A key question surrounding the follow-up to a season as successful as the first Poker Face is whether it can meet expectations and provide a fulfilling continuation. Fortunately, the second season offers numerous twists and turns as Charlie utilizes her unique ability to detect lies while striving to stay ahead of those pursuing her.

Each episode features engaging stories that keep viewers on their toes, such as Cynthia Erivo's quadruplets, who seek what is rightfully theirs after their mother’s passing, and a mysterious funeral home that serves as a film set. Each installment introduces its own air of mystery for Charlie to unravel, filled with action, intrigue, and a captivating lead performance from Lyonne, making it a successful return for the show.

The second season of Poker Face resumes from where the first left off, serving up a delightful mix of intrigue, suspense, and excitement centered around Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who embodies a dry sense of humor perfectly. Rhea Perlman's Beatrix Hasp is a valuable addition as one of the heads of the five families, now on a quest for revenge against Charlie following the events of the first season.

Often humorous but always with a twist, the second season is an incredibly entertaining installment that understands when to poke fun at itself and the genre conventions that fans might anticipate, with episodes taking some unexpected turns. Credit goes to Johnson and the writers/directors for maintaining engagement as viewers invest in Charlie’s adventures.
