Marvel and DC unveil crossovers featuring Batman and Deadpool.
This week brought significant news from the comic book industry as Marvel and DC revealed that the two giants will collaborate for the first time in over twenty years with the upcoming launch of two one-shot comics featuring Marvel's Merc with the Mouth alongside DC's Dark Knight.
Marvel Comics will start things off in September with Batman/Deadpool #1, written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by Greg Capullo. Meanwhile, DC Comics will follow in November with its own Batman/Deadpool #1, written by Grant Morrison with artwork from Dan Mora. Both issues will also include back-up stories from various guest creative teams highlighting additional match-ups between Marvel and DC, with more details to come.
“After completing 60 issues of Amazing Spider-Man, I told Marvel I needed a break,” Wells shared. “Marvel offered me the choice of taking a break or writing a comic featuring Deadpool and Batman alongside the greatest Batman artist of our time. The break was no longer necessary. In Batman, we have a character who is even less tolerant of Deadpool's shenanigans than Wolverine, but a city-wide threat from the Joker creates unusual alliances (literally, if Deadpool had his way). It’s been a thrill letting Deadpool run wild in Gotham City and seeing the consequences.”
“Am I dreaming? This crossover is likely the pinnacle of my career… and I’ve had an amazing career,” Capullo added. “Some of my earliest projects (many years ago) were with X-Force, so I've got a long history with Deadpool. More recently, I devoted over a decade to illustrating Batman at DC. The fact that I get to participate in a crossover event with Deadpool and Batman… If I’m dreaming, please don’t wake me!”
“I don't work on many comics these days, but I couldn't pass up the chance to collaborate with Dan Mora again, one of my favorite artistic partners—and there’s definitely no way I could decline Batman and Deadpool!” exclaimed Grant Morrison. “Expect chaos that breaks the fourth wall, owls, blood, blades, and at least one gigantic typewriter!”
“This is beyond anything I ever thought I’d accomplish in my career, and it’s a tremendous honor to be part of this crossover: these events are rare, and I’m a HUGE fan of Deadpool!” Dan Mora expressed. “When I first teamed up with Grant, I had no idea what to expect, but it was an amazing collaboration. I always wanted to work with Grant again, and Batman/Deadpool feels like a dream realized. Our partnership on this once-in-a-lifetime project is going to be a blast.”
